Anxiety and Panic Attacks


Hi!

First, I have to say that I'm not an expert in this, I'm only trying to help. I've seen other people do this and they might have more experience in these kind of situations. I decided to write this becase I had an attack and I had to write about it
Last week, I was in class and I had a panic attack and had to leave the room because I was feeling bad because I couldn't breath. My friends looked at me because they didn't now what was going on. 

If you, like me and other suffer from Panic Attacks and Anxiety, this blogpost is for YOU.

Anxiety is an awful emotion to feel, a feeling that cannot be controlled and you are unaware of it creeping up on you. Even though anxiety lies in all of us, It affects people in different ways. For example, when we're stressed, our anxiety levels are much higher and some of us can become a lot more sensitive.
Extremely high levels of anxiety, although, cause panic attacks.
I've suffered with panic attacks for the last 3 years, and so i'm writing this blog post to try to help other with what I've learnt about it.
But, for that, we have to learn what is a panic attack

What is a panic attack?

A panic attack is a sudden surge of anxiety and fear, we feel our heart poundig hard and we have the feeling that we can'r breathe.
It's also a sudden urge to push your way through to the nearest exit, the whole room shrinking down around you and everybody staring at you and smothering you. In a split second, without you anticipating it, or knowing it's going to happen, your body releases adrenaline. Something in our brain is programmed to deal with it in a case of life or death. You need adrenaline, for example, in fight to be strong, and you need adrenaline to run fast and get away. 

What happens during a panic attack?


*We breathe in more oxygen, which our muscles use to turn sugar into energy (causing to produce more energy that we don't need);
* Blood is diverted to the muscles, making you pale and light headed.
*Our digestive system shuts down, making our throat dry and makes us feel sick. Our senses are heightened.
*Adrenaline is released, wich causes your heart to beast faster, and your muscles to tense.  When adrenalin floods in our body, it can cause a number of different physical and emotional sensations that may affect you during a panic attack:

These can include:

➥ very rapid breathing or feeling unable to breathe 
➥  A very rapid heartbeat
➥ Feeling 
➥ Numbness in your hands and feet
➥ Feeling nauseous
➥ Feelings of absolute terror
➥ Feeling claustrophobic
➥ Being extremely emotional/uncrontrollable crying
➥ Feelings of unreality, called depersonalisation and derealisation.

Panic attacks come on very quickly, symptoms usually peaking within 10 minutes. Most panic attacks last for between 5 and 20 minutes. 

For me, this happened in classes and around drunk people and around alcohol. The reason being that my first major panic attack, was at a house party, in the middle of nowhere. I only drank a little but wasn't drunk, All my friends were drunk. I didn't know a lot of the people there The next thing I remember was that I couldn't breathe and I felt like the room was closing on my making the air disappear. My heart was pounding really fast and my breathing was out of control. I left the room and went outside. You may think that the outside would help but in this case didn't. I was panicking and wanted to leave and run away from where I was. This was my worst case and lasted about 45 minutes to 1 hour. I couldn't control myself and because I was surrounded by people that didn't know what to do, and I felt even more in panic. 
It got better after walking with my best friends for a while, concentrating on my breathe.


What helps me?

When I'm actually having a panic attack, I find the only things that really take the edge off, are going outside, walking away from the place I was and try to relax. Usally I try to find something that can help me cool down, for example, a fan or a magazine to fan myself. I don't know why but it helps.

Slow, deep breathing.

If i'm with someone, I need them to stay quiet allowing only one person to stay near me and help me calm down. I can't handle everyone talking to me, or trying to distract me, or working me up. It's nice to know someone is with you, but If I'm having a panic attack, I don't have a lot of energy to speak and the only thing that I can think about is trying to breathe and slowing my heartbeats.


How can you help someone who suffers Panic Attacks?

I researched some tips to help avoid panic attacks to help myself from having them..

1. Try to remain calm. Screaming and calling for atention about the situation can only make it worse. A crowd can make the attack much worse.
2. Be patient and accept it. 
3. Let them do things at their own pace.
4. Don't make assumptions about what the panicker needs or you think he needs,just ask them carefully.
5. If you have a friend that's having a panic attack follow this:

WHAT NOT TO SAY: 

"Relax. Calm down. Don't be anxious. You can fight this. Don't be ridiculous.Don't be a coward. Pull yourself together, Stop being silly, what's wrong with you".

 WHAT TO SAY: 

"You can do it no matter what; Tell me what you need now. Breathe slow and low. I know that what you are feeling is painful, but it's not dangerous. You are courageous."


6. Don't try to distract them with stupid questions. During a panic attack, the only thing we wan't is to be over and concentrate on our breathe and our heart ritmn slowing down.
7. Be supportive & reassuring. After a panic attack, the person can feel down, depressed, angry, insecure and with very low self esteem. It's your job to help them to feel better about themselves and to let them know you are there.

Remember this: You are not alone, panic attacks are VERY common and happens to a lot of people. Don't let them ruin your confidence or depress you, you are an amazing person, and you CAN stop them, with the right treatment and right techniques. If you feel confortable, you can talk to a doctor or a psychologist. Don't force yourself to go somewhere if you don't feel comfortable, you and your health are far more important than keeping someone else happy. You are the one who is important in all of this situation. And remember that you have great friends that are there for you, a family that loves you more that anything.

Amazing Biology Experience

Hello!

  Many people don't know but I'm in university studying Biology and Geology and, last month had the privilege of going on a field trip to study deer behavior. And I have to say it was amazing!
   Nothing like waking up at 04:45 am to be ready to travel to the woods and stay there from 06:30 to 10:00am and see these creatures in their natural habitat its just amazing. Being able to hear the birds, the water, the mating calls from far away is really cool and fantastic for field experience. I'm really happy that I said yes to this opportunity because I really liked it. 















I can say that Portugal really has amazing landscapes!  I've learnt how to distinguish an older male deer from a younger male, how many deer stalks a male can have and how to distinguish an older female from a younger female. It's really impressive.
This was a spectacular weekend and I hope to do another soon because I had so much fun. Studying biology is really incredible.

Halloween Tag

Hello!


There're only a few days until Halloween!  Exciting!!

So, I was reading some blogs to get some inspiration for Halloween so I saw CariadOnLife's blog and I saw a tag that she did last year and, since my blog is recent I decided to do this tag! Let's do this!

1. Do you still Trick or Treat?
No, and I think I never did.

2. Do you like going to haunted attractions?
When I was younger, I used to go to an attraction in a fair called "Haunted House" but I stopped. Never been since I was 13 I think.

3. Favourite Halloween movie?
Obviously, The Nightmare Before Christmas, it's the best one!

4. Favourite costume you wore as a child?
The only one I recall is a clown costume but I don't think it was that awesome :(

5. Do you decorate your house for Halloween?
Not anymore, the only thing I do is to search around the house to see if I still have a pumpkin lantern and put it in my dinning table.

6.What are your plans for this years halloween?
Since I'm in University, my and my class are going to dress up and go to a party and it's going to be AWESOME"

7.Do you ever dress up your pet?
No!

8.What was the worst thing you were given when trick or treating?
Never been Trick or Treating ,so i've never been given anything bad!

9. Favourite thing about Halloween?
The creepy atmosphere and the hillarious costumes that other people have.

Little Things That Can Change Our Life


Hi!

It's been a long time since I saw Zoella's " Little Ways To Change Your Life" video and decided that I wanted to change my life a little everyday. I've been changing my lifestyle a little bit over the past 4 months and I can say the results are really amazing.
So, here are my list of little things that can change our life.
  1. Drinking a lot of water:
    A lot of people think that water is only for those who want to lose weight and others think that it's prejudicial to your health but it's wrong! Yes, water may help you loose some weight by forcing you to go to the toilet more often than usual BUT it also helps a lot your body, for example, it can really make a difference in your skin turning it healthier then before.
  2. Eating a little more healthy:

    Almost every people likes to eat treats once in a while, it's who we are and it feels good right? Those delicious chocolates, ice creams and obvioulsly pizza! But, it also makes us less healthy ( unless if you do the 3rd point regularly). And that's why, if we let healthier food enter our food routine it can make great differences!
    For example, trying to drink more healthy smoothies, or making your own food with more vegetables and less rice or pasta, eating at least 1 piece of fruit everyday.
    I believe that this really can make a difference.

  3. Trying to exercise a little bit everyday:

    I know that exercise isn't for everybody, because we don't want to go on a run or a bike ride outside our house BUT there are types of exercises that we can do indoors and that will help us be healthier:

                      * Doing Yoga - I'm not an expert on yoga but I enjoy doing it sometimes to help me be more flexible and I kinda like it. Yoga can also help to clean our mind of bad thoughts and replacing it with purity.
                    * Dancing - I loove dancing and it's a little exercise to warm up our bodies. 
                 *Walking - If we walk instead of driving everywhere, we're doing some exercise and helping our body. These walks can also help to clean our mind of bad thoughts.

 Her video really inspired me to write this and to help changing my lifestyle. She really is a role model.

So, these are three simple topics that can help us change our everyday life one step at a time. There are more things that we can do, but I think that there three are three of the most important ones.

Time for reality


Well, I just wan't to let my thoughts out and write them out to release some stress of mine.
I guess that from now on I have to become a different person and that will leave some marks and will be extremely hard to accomplish. Some stuff that becomes part of us it's hard to let it go and it will cost a lot of hard work, sweat and perhaps tears.
For the past few weeks, I've been having exams after exams after exams and let's say that they didn't go as well as I was expecting. Why? Some procrastination, involving watching 3 seasons of a tv show instead of studying, which resulted in crying and failing at those subjects, and watching a lot of youtube videos.
I'll admit, I have a lot of youtubers that I like, admire and look up to because I think that they are just amazing and cheer up a lot of us and that's really awesome. They can make a lot of people forget about the crap life that they have and just be happy for 5 to 15 minutes while watching a video. Most of people don't understand the reason why but for me is really simple: we are all just human beings but some of us are made for entertaining others and that's ok. There's nothing wrong to watch a video about a haul video or a comedy sketch or a video game gameplay. Is just a normal thing that normal people do and there's nothing wrong with that. They make videos because they enjoy doing it and because they also know that they have viewrs that really like them and like their videos and look up to them because they maybe have that sparkle that came out of boredom and became that thing that a lot of us - mostly teenagers - look up for. 
Me, for example, I look up to Zoella because she's a ordinary girl that had a simple talent: being a good blog writer. Normal? Yes, but she had that sparkle that made people read her blog and wanting more that they were the ones that encourage her to starting making youtube videos and now look at where she is: her youtube channel as over 5 million subscribers, 1.8 million twitter followers, write her own book and much more. And it all started with  simple blog that was wanted by thousands of people.
I look up to a lot of others youtubers, because not speaking for only myself, but they cheer up our day with just a video with 5 to 15 minutes about something that make us smile, laugh or think about our loves and we just connect with them so well that they became part of our lives. We become part of this world that has millions and millions of people that like the same things as us and don't discriminate us because of something stupid like our hair for example. Instead, we built a lot of friendships bounded by one simple person. 

For me, as been a part of my life for almost 2 years and I think that as became 90% of me: it helped me when I was discriminated and bullied by some of my classmates and my old university course. And it hurts because now I have to cut it in about 50%. It really helped my forgetting those aspects that I didn't like in my life and placed a smile in my face when I didn't want one. Most people don't believe that some random person can make a difference in other's life, and I believe because it helped me a lot and if can make a difference for me, can also make a difference for someone across the world.

I think that it's just stupid to write this in the beginning on summer, because in that time I'll have all the time of the world to do what ever I want but, if I have to redeem myself I have to start early before it's too late and have to repeat all subjects again and be in a deep depression. But I think that I'll still trying to write my thoughts on this blog and stuff.

If anyone is reading this, I just want to thank you for having the patience to read the feelings of a girl that just wants to improve her life. Sorry if I bored you.
